Do you like to play football? Or perhaps you like to watch football games?
Football is popular in China, and especially among men. Even though the male Chinese football team has not found much successful yet, the Chinese audience enjoys watching their games.<\/p>\n

Perhaps you would like to converse about football with your Chinese friends? In this post we look at some basic football vocabulary and phrases.<\/p>\n

First of all, how do you say football in Chinese? Football is called \u8db3z\u00fa<\/rt>\u7403qi\u00fa<\/rt><\/ruby>, and a football fan is \u8db3z\u00fa<\/rt>\u7403qi\u00fa<\/rt>\u8ff7m\u00ed<\/rt><\/ruby>. \u7403 means \u201cball\u201d, so a football player is called \u7403qi\u00fa<\/rt>\u5458yu\u00e1n<\/rt><\/ruby>, and the team is called \u7403qi\u00fa<\/rt>\u961fdu\u00ec<\/rt><\/ruby>. Since \u961f means \u201cteam\u201d, you can also use it to express for example the Chinese team: \u4e2dzh\u014dng<\/rt>\u56fdgu\u00f3<\/rt>\u961fdu\u00ec<\/rt><\/ruby>.<\/p>\n

You can combine it with \u201cfootball\u201d to get the Chinese word for a football game: \u8db3z\u00fa<\/rt>\u7403qi\u00fa<\/rt>\u8d5bs\u00e0i<\/rt><\/ruby>.. Perhaps the most famous football competition is the FIFA World Cup, right? The official name for the FIFA World Cup in Chinese is \u56fdgu\u00f3<\/rt>\u9645j\u00ec<\/rt>\u8db3z\u00fa<\/rt>\u8054li\u00e1n<\/rt>\u4e16sh\u00ec<\/rt>\u754cji\u00e8<\/rt>\u676fb\u0113i<\/rt><\/ruby>, but often we just call it \u4e16sh\u00ec<\/rt>\u754cji\u00e8<\/rt>\u676fb\u0113i<\/rt><\/ruby>. Another popular competition is the UEFA European Football Championship, or \u6b27\u014du<\/rt>\u6d32zh\u014du<\/rt>\u8db3z\u00fa<\/rt>\u7403qi\u00fa<\/rt>\u9526j\u01d0n<\/rt>\u6807bi\u0101o<\/rt>\u8d5bs\u00e0i<\/rt><\/ruby>. We can shorten this too, and just say \u6b27\u014du<\/rt>\u6d32zh\u014du<\/rt>\u676fb\u0113i<\/rt><\/ruby>.<\/p>\n

Now that you know some basic football vocabulary, you can ask your friends like this:<\/p>\n\n\n
