One of the most common questions you\u2019re asked as a college student is: \u201cWhat\u2019s your major?\u201d I always struggled to answer this when visiting my relatives in Taiwan. Nobody taught me how to say \u201cMarketing\u201d in Chinese and for some reason I always forgot to ask. To save you the same embarrassment, we\u2019ve created this list of the most common college majors translated into Chinese:<\/p>\n
There are a few ways you might hear someone ask your major. One common way to ask your major in Chinese is \u4f60\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u4e13\u4e1a\u7684\uff1f(n\u01d0 sh\u00ec sh\u00e9n me zhu\u0101n y\u00e8 de?) Another way to ask is \u4f60\u5b66\u4ec0\u4e48? (n\u01d0 xu\u00e9 sh\u00e9n me?) The difference in meaning between these two questions is very subtle. It\u2019s almost like asking \u201cWhat is your major?\u201d or \u201cWhat do you study?\u201d<\/p>\n
To answer the question you could respond by saying \u6211\u662f__\u4e13\u4e1a\u7684 (w\u01d2 sh\u00ec __<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0zhu\u0101n y\u00e8 de). You could also say \u6211\u5b66___ (w\u01d2 xu\u00e9) …followed by your major. Again, the meaning is something like \u201cI\u2019m a _<\/em><\/strong>major\u201d or \u201cI study___\u201d<\/p>\n Now that you know these new phrases, you should go try them on one of your Chinese friends or the next Chinese person that you meet! Remember to follow up and ask them the same questions. If they are not a college student, you could ask about their work or what they like to do for fun. The proper response is \u6211\u8f85\u4fee___ (w\u01d2 f\u01d4 xi\u016b___).<\/p>\n Besides your major, you may also be asked your year in college. To ask what year you are in college you would say \u4f60\u5927\u5b66\u51e0\u5e74\u7ea7\u4e86\uff1f(n\u01d0 d\u00e0 xu\u00e9 j\u01d0 ni\u00e1n j\u00ed le?) Another way to ask is basically a shortened version of that: \u4f60\u5927\u51e0\u4e86? (n\u01d0 d\u00e0 j\u01d0 le?)<\/p>\n In the U.S. we would usually reply by saying freshman, sophomore, junior or senior. In Chinese they make it much easier by just saying what year they are in school. The Chinese translations of freshman, sophomore, junior and senior are as follows:<\/p>\n After undergraduate school, you could also go on to earn a master\u2019s \u7855\u58eb (shu\u00f2 sh\u00ec) or a PhD \u535a\u58eb (b\u00f3 sh\u00ec).
