Linguists generally agree that there are seven main groups, but this is contested, with some arguing that there should be more:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mandarin (<ruby>\u5b98\u8bdd<rt>gu\u0101n hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; spoken in northern, northwestern and southwestern parts of China<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wu (<ruby>\u5434\u8bed<rt>w\u00fa y\u016d<\/rt><\/ruby>);<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spoken mainly in Shanghai and the provinces Jiangsu and Zhejiang<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Min (<ruby>\u95fd\u8bed<rt>m\u00edn y\u016d<\/rt><\/ruby>);<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spoken mainly in Fujian province<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Yue (<ruby>\u7ca4\u8bed<rt>yu\u00e8 y\u016d<\/rt><\/ruby>); <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoken mainly in the provinces Guangdong and Guangxi. This is the group that contains Cantonese.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Xiang (<ruby>\u6e58\u8bed<rt>xi\u0101ng y\u016d<\/rt><\/ruby>);<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spoken in Hunan province<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gan (<ruby>\u8d63\u8bed<rt>g\u00e0n y\u016d<\/rt><\/ruby>); <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoken in Jiangxi province<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><b>Kejia [Hakka] (<ruby>\u5ba2\u5bb6\u8bdd<rt>k\u00e8 ji\u0101 hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby>);<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mainly found in small enclaves in different provinces in southern China, notably Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and Sichuan<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-70a1677 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"70a1677\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Can people understand different dialects?<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c950d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c950d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We might be used to hearing the word \u201cdialect\u201d in the context of Western languages, where people who speak different dialects can understand each other. In Chinese, however, these dialects are so different from each other that they aren\u2019t mutually intelligible. Instead, different dialects of Chinese are essentially separate languages. Add to that the fact that each of these broad groups can be broken down into sub-dialects, and you\u2019ll start to get a picture for how massive the scope of Chinese as a language family can get.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make things easier, Chinese people will often refer to their local dialect by the province, or sometimes even the city that it\u2019s spoken in. Examples might include <ruby>\u4e0a\u6d77\u8bdd<rt>sh\u00e0ng h\u01cei hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby> (Shanghainese), <ruby>\u6e56\u5357\u8bdd<rt>h\u00fa n\u00e1n hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby> (Hunanese), or <ruby>\u5317\u4eac\u8bdd<rt>b\u011bi j\u012bng hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby> (Beijing dialect).<\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e00f8ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e00f8ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Confusion with the word \u201cMandarin\u201d<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98b2600 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"98b2600\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The word <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMandarin\u201d is used a lot when talking about Chinese, but can mean different things:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d0ea4b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d0ea4b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Mandarin (<ruby>\u5b98\u8bdd<rt>gu\u0101n hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby>) as a dialect family: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To linguists, \u201cMandarin\u201d (<ruby>\u5b98\u8bdd<rt>gu\u0101n hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby>) refers to a massive language group that includes sub-dialects spoken across a wide area in China. For example, <ruby>\u56db\u5ddd\u8bdd<rt>s\u00ec chu\u0101n hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby> (Sichuanese) and\u00a0<ruby>\u5317\u4eac\u8bdd<rt>b\u011bi j\u012bng hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby> (Beijing dialect) sound radically different, but still belong to this wider Mandarin dialect group<\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32cd32c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32cd32c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Mandarin (<ruby>\u666e\u901a\u8bdd<rt>p\u01d4 t\u014dng hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby>) as the standard language:&nbsp;<\/strong>When most people use the word \u201cMandarin,\u201d they&#8217;re referring to the version of Chinese used as the standard language in many parts of the Chinese speaking world. This is the version of Chinese taught in schools and used in broadcasting and media. It&#8217;s referred to as <ruby>\u666e\u901a\u8bdd<rt>p\u01d4 t\u014dng hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby> in Mainland China, <ruby>\u56fd\u8bed<rt>gu\u00f3 y\u01d4<\/rt><\/ruby> in Taiwan, and <ruby>\u534e\u8bed<rt>hu\u00e1 y\u01d4<\/rt><\/ruby> in Singapore and Malaysia. In English, this is called <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cModern Standard Mandarin,\u201d <\/span>\u201cStandard Mandarin,\u201d or \u201cStandard Chinese,\u201d but most people just say \u201cMandarin.\u201d This is also what most people mean when they refer to Chinese with words like \u201c<ruby>\u4e2d\u6587<rt>zh\u014dng w\u00e9n<\/rt><\/ruby>\u201d or  \u201c<ruby>\u6c49\u8bed<rt>h\u00e0n y\u01d4<\/rt><\/ruby>\u201d in everyday conversation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7ac89f0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7ac89f0\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2cab272\" data-id=\"2cab272\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8662da elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a8662da\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h1 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Modern Standard Mandarin: <ruby>\u666e\u901a\u8bdd<rt>p\u01d4 t\u014dng hu\u00e0<\/rt><\/ruby><\/h1>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-25ad4e8 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"25ad4e8\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-adf30c2\" data-id=\"adf30c2\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2769138 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2769138\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the fall of the Qing dynasty, there was a serious push to create a national language that could be shared among all Chinese citizens. If a Chinese person grew up speaking a different dialect at home, they might find it harder to speak Standard Mandarin with a \u201cproper\u201d accent. In fact, you could argue that there are no true native speakers of Modern Standard Mandarin. Instead, people who need to speak \u201cperfectly\u201d often undergo special training before entering fields like education or broadcasting.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b34b58d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b34b58d\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-886e95e\" data-id=\"886e95e\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e5df15b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e5df15b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Standard Mandarin with an Accent<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c223355 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c223355\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the exception of people who go through special training, very few Chinese people will actually speak Standard Mandarin with the level of clarity that you might hear in the classroom or news broadcasts. As such, it\u2019s very normal for Chinese people to speak Standard Mandarin with an accent that reflects where they\u2019re from.
